It Ain’t Little, It’s My iPhone Screen:
How Apps Make TV Fun

I resisted the lure of the iPhone as long as I could, but finally, that touchscreen got me and I gave in. I still didn’t really embrace the whole App thing for a while, though, until a friend got an iTouch and I found myself looking for games we could play together.

Then, one day, it dawned on me as I was browsing through the App store that I could combine my love of TV with my new found App obsession—there’s everything from stuff to watch television with to Apps for just about every show out right now. You can even work your TiVo with your iPhone! Here are some of the best of the TV App crop:

Lost Addict:

This is a free App that is in no way affiliated with ABC or the show itself, so you won’t find any official video clips or anything of that sort. What you WILL find is a bucketful of fan theories, videos, podcasts, and more, all presented in an easy-to-read and nice to look at format. People take their “Lost” theories very seriously, and anything you’ve ever wondered about, from the disappearance of Walt to the utter uselessness of Kate, probably has an in-depth video and/or theory posting.

tvChatter:

For the Tweeters (Twitterers?) among us, this freebie is a hoot. Choose from about 30+ of the most chat-able TV shows like “30 Rock” “Glee”, “American Idol”, and “Dancing With the Stars” and get a running scroll of all the tweets being tweeted on Twitter about the show live. It’s like watching with a big group of people, but there’s no need to shush anyone. Plus, you can type your own two cents (or, in this case, 140 characters) about Crystal Bowersox, the antics of Liz Lemon, or, if you must, whatever the heck is going on with “The Hills”.

Dexter the Game

I’m a cheapskate when it comes to the App Store, and at $5.99, this is probably the priciest App I’ve ever purchased. Totally worth it. “Dexter the Game” takes everything you love from the show, including Michael C.  Hall narrating and some great looking graphics, and puts it into a game that combines killing with sleuthing with storyline—it’s like making your own little episode! There are a lot of pretty cool TV show spin-off games (“The Simpsons” Arcade game, which comes in both fee and paid versions, is also a treat for fans), but “Dexter” is by far the winner.

TV.com

Sure, “TV.com” is essentially an App extension of CBS, but if you’re a fan of most of their crime franchises, their Daytime line-up, or many of their classic shows, this is a must-have. Who doesn’t want instant access to “The Twilight Zone”? Plus, this App is FREE, so basically what you get is access to full episodes and clips from lots of your favorite shows at no cost that are viewable anywhere you can take your iPhone.

i.TV

Another freebie for TV fans, this App is like a TV Guide on steroids. Customizable with your individual TV service, this one lets you scroll through listings, choose Favorites to keep track of upcoming episodes, and even set them to record if you have a TiVo. Oh, but it doesn’t stop there—it even lets you see what people are watching, provides details about shows and episodes, and lets you share your viewings on Facebook and Twitter. There’s even a whole section for movie theaters and times, ordering tickets where available, and managing your Netflix account. All for free.

I get it now—my phone is changing the way I watch TV. Sure the screen is small, but there’s a whole new element to television with these and all the other TV Apps, and for any true fan, there’s an App for you.
