One Man’s Impact on The New Media Scene: Frank Beacham
1969 Graduate of University of South Carolina

Jan Manon | tvscreen.com

New York City-based independent writer, director and producer Frank Beacham talks about his career and the direction of Web Video, TV and more. Frank has a B.A. in Journalism, 1969, from the University of South Carolina. He did post-graduate studies at UCLA, the University of Southern California, and the American Film Institute.

What is your background? What challenges did you overcome to get to where you are?

Frank Beacham: I’ve been a writer, producer, and a cameraman since the late 1960s. As a 16mm TV news cameraman, I saw my first small, lightweight portable video camera in 1968 at the Democratic Convention in Chicago. It would soon be introduced in the United States as the Sony Portapack. Having lugged all that heavy film equipment through the streets of Chicago, I was entranced by the very idea of portable video. That little video package would later start the small format video revolution of the 1970s.

Later, I became a staff reporter for United Press International, Gannett Newspapers, Post-Newsweek Television and the Miami Herald. In 1975, I decided to leave the “reporter” business and bought a color version of the Sony Portapak. That led me into the video production business, where I remained until 1986.
It was an exciting time since video was exploding on the scene. In 1976, I bought the first self-contained portable broadcast camera, the RCA TK-76. It was a very heavy three-tube camera that cost $55,000. Not only did it break the bank, but it would break your back to carry it. We used it with a ¾-inch U-Matic portable video recorder—also very heavy to carry.

Later, in 1982, I got delivery of one of the first Sony Betacams. It had a single tube and was serial number #3. By today’s standards, it was large and heavy. To give you a sense of perspective—in the 70s—one battery for one of our cameras weighed more than today’s small camcorders. We had to carry several of those “bricks” along with the production gear. We travelled with about 25 cases of gear!

As horrible as that sounds now, it replaced something much worse. When I began as a studio cameraman, the first color cameras were almost the size of a Volkswagen Beetle on a pedestal. They took hours just to warm up for use. Until the 70s, all television gear was huge, heavy, and very expensive. Back then we wanted to be free of the giant television networks, who controlled all video since they were only ones would could afford the production equipment.

I got involved in video just as the broadcast networks were switching from 16mm film to videotape. During these years, through Television Matrix, my company, supplied video gear and freelance crews to all the major television networks. We eventually worked in 27 countries, much of it in Europe and Latin America.

In 1983, while shooting a segment for Entertainment Tonight, I was approached by Robin Leach about shooting a very low budget magazine show. It had to be done for $100,000 an episode, which had never before been done. He wanted to know whether it could be put together at that cost on the then new Betacam format. With the help of Sony, who built the first inter-format Betacam edit bay for my company, we moved to Los Angeles in the summer of 1984. A few months later, for better or worse, we gave birth to Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous.

Proving that life can take some very strange twists, the project with Robin Leach led to my meeting the great director, Orson Welles. Orson was very interested in exploring video and wanted to do a show using Betacam. I worked with Orson as a producer, helping him raise money and putting together the production. Unfortunately, it never happened. The day before we were to begin shooting, Orson died at his typewriter while working on the script. After Orson’s death, I took a story he had given me to the actor-writer-director Tim Robbins. Out of that came the 1999 feature, Cradle Will Rock. I was an executive producer on that film.

Any current projects you would like to share?

Now, I am mainly a writer living in New York. I do a lot projects, including the column in TV Technology. Mainly, I enjoy digging up and writing true stories, and currently have two feature films in the works, the Orangeburg Massacre and Charlie’s Place. I am developing the website www.orangeburgmassacre.com, which will have audio, images, and multimedia involving the cover-up of an unresolved 1968 civil rights murder over the past 40 years. It came from a story in my current book, Whitewash: A Southern Journey through Music, Mayhem and Murder

Any ideal length for videos now? Thoughts on this?

Right now, on the Internet, you’ve got mostly short videos, mainly due to lack of bandwidth. I think that is temporary. Once the bandwidth increases, we’ll be seeing longer videos. At some point in the near future, length will cease to be an issue.

What trends or predictions in webvideo coming in the future/near future? Thoughts on making videos today?

Today, we have many different ways to tell a story. Creating a good story is what matters. It distinguishes one work from the rest. I remember being fond of Gordon Park’s photo essays in Life Magazine. Recently, I’ve seen talented people make beautiful photo montages, setting stills to audio in an application called Soundslides. These slideshows surpasse many full motion videos made today. It is what you do with you have that counts. As more bandwidth becomes available—which it will through fiber optic technology and the like—the possibility for watching full-length movies online becomes closer to reality.

With web video, an artist can create works without a huge amount of money. Less money equates to more artistic freedom. More and more artists are opening their own personal studios. That doesn’t mean we will have better quality video. It just means we will have the possibility of it because entry barriers are removed.

Storytelling remains a craft, a creative process for the individual. Whether you have the latest gear or not, your ability to tell a good story is what makes your movie or multimedia project stand out.

I feel that there are incredible opportunities for talented people. The old gate keepers are falling. Anyone with a powerful story to tell can now tell it. There will be more of everything—and that includes medocrity. The trick will be cutting through all the clutter and finding your audience.

Any additional thoughts about the future of the Internet and video?

The Internet is the next big media outlet. It’s personalized media—what you want and when you want it. Right now, the content is “half-baked,” some good, some bad, most mediocre. As bandwidth and delivery systems improve, I have no doubt that the Internet will replace the traditional television stations and networks. Their time is nearly up.

Right now, the Internet is more democratic than existing media outlets. There is more diversity online and no one owns the Internet. However, there will be a huge fight to keep it that way. The world’s media conglomerates don’t want to see individual producers communicate directly with their audience. They will try to price independents out of the game. That’s a certainty!

I think the Internet is at an experimental stage regarding video sites such as YouTube. Today they can get by with amateur home videos, but that is already getting old. It’s bit like being bored by the vacation photos of a bad photographer. Our eyes glaze over. As the novelty of web video wears off, the age-old demand for a “good story, well told” will come into play. Always has, always will.

So today we’ve got powerful new media technology and more people using it. But the quality of the content is generally low. Just as having a word processor doesn’t make a writer or a camera makes a photographer, having a web video outlet does not make skilled video producers. It only creates the opportunity for them by lowering cost barriers. It does not create talent. That must come from each individual.

With all this technology, the creative possibilities are enormous. But making a compelling video story is about craft, skill and—most of all—talent. We have yet to see the best, but it will come. I think the golden age of the independent filmmaker or videographer has arrived.

It Ain’t Little, It’s My iPhone Screen:
How Apps Make TV Fun

_____________________________________________________

Amber Goddard | tvscreen.com

I resisted the lure of the iPhone as long as I could, but finally, that touchscreen got me and I gave in. I still didn’t really embrace the whole App thing for a while, though, until a friend got an iTouch and I found myself looking for games we could play together.

Then, one day, it dawned on me as I was browsing through the App store that I could combine my love of TV with my new found App obsession—there’s everything from stuff to watch television with to Apps for just about every show out right now. You can even work your TiVo with your iPhone! Here are some of the best of the TV App crop:

Lost Addict:

This is a free App that is in no way affiliated with ABC or the show itself, so you won’t find any official video clips or anything of that sort. What you WILL find is a bucketful of fan theories, videos, podcasts, and more, all presented in an easy-to-read and nice to look at format. People take their “Lost” theories very seriously, and anything you’ve ever wondered about, from the disappearance of Walt to the utter uselessness of Kate, probably has an in-depth video and/or theory posting.

tvChatter:

For the Tweeters (Twitterers?) among us, this freebie is a hoot. Choose from about 30+ of the most chat-able TV shows like “30 Rock” “Glee”, “American Idol”, and “Dancing With the Stars” and get a running scroll of all the tweets being tweeted on Twitter about the show live. It’s like watching with a big group of people, but there’s no need to shush anyone. Plus, you can type your own two cents (or, in this case, 140 characters) about Crystal Bowersox, the antics of Liz Lemon, or, if you must, whatever the heck is going on with “The Hills”.

Dexter the Game

I’m a cheapskate when it comes to the App Store, and at $5.99, this is probably the priciest App I’ve ever purchased. Totally worth it. “Dexter the Game” takes everything you love from the show, including Michael C. Hall narrating and some great looking graphics, and puts it into a game that combines killing with sleuthing with storyline—it’s like making your own little episode! There are a lot of pretty cool TV show spin-off games (“The Simpsons” Arcade game, which comes in both fee and paid versions, is also a treat for fans), but “Dexter” is by far the winner.

TV.com

Sure, “TV.com” is essentially an App extension of CBS, but if you’re a fan of most of their crime franchises, their Daytime line-up, or many of their classic shows, this is a must-have. Who doesn’t want instant access to “The Twilight Zone”? Plus, this App is FREE, so basically what you get is access to full episodes and clips from lots of your favorite shows at no cost that are viewable anywhere you can take your iPhone.

i.TV

Another freebie for TV fans, this App is like a TV Guide on steroids. Customizable with your individual TV service, this one lets you scroll through listings, choose Favorites to keep track of upcoming episodes, and even set them to record if you have a TiVo. Oh, but it doesn’t stop there—it even lets you see what people are watching, provides details about shows and episodes, and lets you share your viewings on Facebook and Twitter. There’s even a whole section for movie theaters and times, ordering tickets where available, and managing your Netflix account. All for free.

I get it now—my phone is changing the way I watch TV. Sure the screen is small, but there’s a whole new element to television with these and all the other TV Apps, and for any true fan, there’s an App for you.

You may be a student, a graduate or in a different career all together. If the concept of working in the world of TV is something you aspire to, if you want television to be your career path, then this regular column can help you find that job.

The fact is you want to be a part of an industry that you’ve had an intimate knowledge of your entire life.

There is no mystery to getting or performing a job in television.

There are a wide range of television jobs that will always exist and will even grow in this industry – even in times when the economy is tight.

Television THRIVES in a Tough Economy. TV and media jobs are numerous and they tend to focus on these main areas:

• Conceiving Television
•	Creating Television
•	Selling Television
•	Delivering Television

The workforce behind these categories expands regularly, and while viewing habits definitely grow to include “internet broadcasts” and content on the web, this trend opens up the job market even more. Television job seekers are in a strong and realistic position. In fact, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics has forecast steady growth in the broadcasting sector over the next decade.

“Workers with little job experience will find it easier to gain employment in smaller markets or at small stations in large markets” – U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics

Armed with this information, you will come to understand that the television industry is not some exclusive club, but it is in fact hungry for workers on every level, and once you get in the door, you can choose to map out a plan to move up the TV job ladder.

Television, video and related internet media jobs are in virtually every city in the country. These jobs are realistically obtainable when you have and use the correct information. The strategy you need is now in your hands, so let’s start.

Realities of the TV Job Market

The glamour of the TV industry attracts many jobs seekers. Like so many paths in life, only those truly dedicated to following through will reach their goal of television employment.

The good news is that being dedicated to finding a job in TV is easier than it was even just five years ago. Knowing how to properly use all the tools of our modern age will give you an edge. Here’s how you will use this advantage:

• You will understand the types of TV jobs available

•	You will realistically target the right job for you•You will train yourself quickly using tools specific (and available), to the job you target

• You will create a powerful resume, cover letter and/or demo reel

• You will use the internet to market yourself

• You will network in every smart way possible in a short amount of time

• You will immediately find where the jobs are

•	You will get in the door, stay there and “climb the ladder”

That is how to get a job in television. It’s executing these simple steps correctly – period.

Part 2 of an ongoing series from tvscreen.com

The Question of Formal Education

Later in these articles we will more deeply explore broadcasting programs and schools of every kind. In fact, We will provide a directory of television-focused colleges and trade schools that are likely near you – but there is a big question you will need to ask yourself. The answer depends on where you are at this point in your life:

“Do I Need to Go To School To Get a Job in TV?”

Specifically, do you need a college degree? Without a doubt, this is a life-affecting question. Does a degree give you an edge? Yes, of course, without any doubt. Will it keep you from a job in television? No way.

“But from all I’ve ever heard, I can’t get a job in television without a college degree. How do I even get a job interview! It doesn’t seem possible.”

I’m not in anyway discounting the benefits – and prestige – of a college degree. In fact, all the steps you will take to get a TV job will be much more potent if you have a degree in hand – but a lack of degree will not necessarily stop you.

Beyond giving you a well-rounded education, being in a four-year college will typically allow you to take classes that are based on real-world television experience. The best of these schools will also allow you to work at an on-campus TV station, and/or obtain an internship at a local television facility or related job. This cannot be down-played, but do read on…

Other School Options

There are also technical schools that focus on broadcast careers. These two-year (or sometimes less), “trade schools”, create a television environment similar to what you might experience in college. This means you can still train in an atmosphere that allows for that always-useful “real-world” television experience, depending on the job you target.

Many of these more specialized schools also provide access to television-specific internships and job placement programs.

It is also worth mentioning that many modern high schools do offer media-hungry students access to school-based TV stations, and sometimes very helpful connections to local media facilities.

In many high schools, young adults can start cutting their teeth on video edit systems, video camera operation, directing, on-camera talent and more. Some high schools also work with local TV stations to provide a “light version” of television internship programs.

Beyond School

Training in television can also be obtained by volunteering your services at a local television facility. Many TV stations, especially in smaller local markets, welcome the concept of “free help”. The benefit to them is obvious. From first-hand knowledge, I know that the benefit in this approach are solid and can open doors for you.

Such a position should be viewed as a training ground. Learn what you can. Develop the skills you are looking for and move forward. Many times volunteers will be the first talent pool a TV station or production facility will draw from when looking to fill a paid position.

Next in this series:

“Are Many TV Job Positions Available?”
